Welcome to CK Rally!
4/25/2005 - Back from Oregon Trail!
What a weekend, what else can I say! We had some problems, to say the least...
Friday's PIR stages were a bunch of fun, with some very interesting mixed surface (tarmac, gravel, grass) racing and crazy weather (dry, dusty and sunny at one point to very dark and rainy at another). We also ran a side-by-side special stage that didn't end up being included in the scoring but was probably fun to watch. We got absolutely destroyed by Shadd Foster's rotary powered RX3.
That car looked quick!
Saturday all was going well until we moved over to let someone pass and got hung up on some hidden logs which pulled us off the road (causing the stuff picture above). A polite manuver gone bad, really quick. Thankfully the damage wasn't too extensive and we were able to get it sorted enough to run sunday too:
Sunday we started slow, with the intent of driving to finish. Unforunately luck wasn't in our favor and an engine fire ended our rally on SS19 (the very last stage, ugh!). There were some photographers around but I forgot to get their names and I was pretty occupied with putting the fire out to try and take pictures! We did however get the in-car camera's footage which has been captured
for your viewing pleasure. Click here or on the fire picture above.
As much as went wrong this weekend means it will definately be a long time coming for the CKRally GTI to return to competition. I hope to make it out again this year with a first event in the timeline of Wild West or Pacific Forest Rally. Until then, here's a couple of shots of the race car in all it's glory before this weekend's tragic occurances.

I will definately be around the rally events in some fashion (either as a rally worker or working service for a fellow competitor) so I'll still be around. Ian may look for another driver to work with until I get the Golf back together.
I've updated the events page to include current events: here
So that's it for now... Ciao!
3/7/2005 - Back from Doowops, which was great fun!
Sadly, we were on the wrong side of gremlins all weekend. Our rally ended competitively about 100 yards into saturday's SS1.
I lost a cotterpin off my shift linkage and took me a few minutes to get out of the car, rig it back together, get back in and belted up and get underway. I safety wired the whole assembly at service (something I probably should have done a LONG time ago) but still was able to continue.
I started having fueling issues at the start of Saturday SS4 and under WOT was getting a surging from insufficient fuel pressure. Still managed to better my time vs the first run (SS3) but was frustrating anyway... SS5 the fueling issue seemed to have been better, but I lost my defroster and it was raining by that time, so I ran the stage through a foggy window haze (aka SLOW).
Got back to the hotel and fixed the defrost and all that, the car seemed ok so we went to sleep after some of Ray's Pizza-fest.
Sunday morning we just couldn't get the car to fire, and the fuel pump wasn't replacable (even if I had a spare, which I didn't) in the 30 minutes before parc expose, so we loaded up the car, headed over to parc expose and withdrew.
So I've got a good sized list of bugs to work out before Oregon. Congratz to all my fellow G2 dudes who were running strong! Derek was flying, Nate was mr. reliable speed as always, as was Jim Thompson who was also doing particularily well. Nat Stow seemed to be shaking off the rust pretty quickly and putting in a strong performance. I'm looking forward to a good hard year in G2!
Cya all in Oregon at our next event, the Oregon Trail rally (link) on April 22nd, 23rd and 24th.
2/19/2005 - Well we're just two weeks away from our first rally, the Doo Wop Series events held around Hoquiam, WA for Day 1 and Brooklyn, WA for Day 2.
For 2005, Ian will continue co-driving for me, but because of his Job he's out of town for a long time, and will miss this one unfortunately! Stepping up for one event is one of my friends,
Jin Kim, who has expressed some interest in rally so I thought I'd give him a shot. It hasn't really been a very productive winter at the CKRally garage, but the car is in better shape than
it has been for some time. Our biggest change so far is a reinforced front end with a proper rally-style camber plate:
I'll be back with more updates soon. I'm intending to contest the Pacific Rally Group in Group 2 and also compete in the somewhat less official Group F class. I need to verify my eligibility (meaning weight)
for this class but I haven't had a chance to yet, so I may skip it for the Doowop's. Anyway, looking forward to competing and I'll see you all on race day!
